AMṚTEŚVARA LINEAGE (NETRA TANTRA)

AMṚTEŚVARA – Lineage of the ‘Deathless Lord’

  • One of the eight lineages of Tantric Śhaivism that prospered in Kashmir
  • Its entral (divinely revealed) scripture is the Netra Tantra (Tantra of [the Lord’s central] ‘Eye’)
  • The Netra Tantra received an extensive commentary (-uddyota) by Kṣemarāja (11th century A.D.)

The nebulous, independent cult of Amṛteśvara (Śiva as the ‘Lord of Deathless-Nectar’) and his consort, Amṛtalakṣmī drew considerable attention in Kashmir, as demonstrated by the fact that Kṣemarāja, associated with both the Kashmiri Trika and Kālīkula (Krama) lineages, wrote an extensive commentary (uddyota) on its central scripture, the Netra Tantra. This cult uniquely prescribed its central mantra deity, Amṛteśvara, and his retinue as temporary substitutes for the those of the other Śaiva doctrinal streams when the performance of various rites that fell under the sole ritual jurisdiction of the Amṛteśvara cult alone were required. The Netra Tantra even prescribes the Amṛteśvara mantra in the worship of  non-Śaiva deities, such asViṣṇu, Gaṇeśa, and the Buddha.
